High Sierra Trail

For the more serious hikers visiting Sequoia National Park, the start of the Crescent Meadow Trail doubles as the start of the High Sierra Trail, one of the park's most well-known treks. Take this trail as far as you'd like; it goes on and on, squeezing through the Great Western Divide at Kaweah Gap and continuing through the backcountry.

Eventually the trail meets up with the famous John Muir Trail, just 13 miles before you hit the summit of Mount Whitney.

If you start at Crescent Meadow and go to the top of Mount Whitney, you'll hike for 62 miles and experience a wide range of scenery, from soggy meadows to dry canyons to roaring rivers to snow-capped mountains.

The park suggests taking six days to get to Mount Whitney, going about 10 miles per day. This gives you the opportunity to stop and camp at places like Bearpaw Meadow, Moraine Lake, Kern Hot Springs and Guitar Lake.
