5 Tips for Camping With Kids in the Cold

Written by

Bring the Right Tent

If you're camping in below-freezing weather or with snow, think about using a four-season tent. When you go to pitch, pack down the snow underneath where you'll put the tent so it doesn't end up melting beneath you at night. You can also dig down a little to help block the wind.

Make sure you have a rainfly and good ventilation to keep moisture and frost away. You can also bring a rug to put outside the entrance, as it will make the chore of taking your boots off much easier.

Fuel

Kids run around whether it's hot or cold, so be prepared with plenty of energy-filled snacks and water. Granola bars and trail mix are great on-the-go snacks loaded with protein and healthy fats.

Consider bringing sports drinks that will hydrate, taste good and provide added calories. Don't forget the hot cocoa and cider in thermoses, and plan meals that can be easily eaten with mittens on. Additionally, remember to eat a snack before bed so your body has extra fuel to stay warm overnight.

Keep the Kids Moving

In the summer, it's fine for your kids to sit around and read, play games or slowly explore. In the winter, however, staying still means staying cold. Plan ahead with activities to get everyone moving.

If there will be snow, bring a sled, build a snowman or igloo, go snowshoeing and skiing, or set up a hiking scavenger hunt. If there isn't snow, opt for games like volleyball or kickball that keep everyone active.

At night, building a fire is a must. Make sure you haul in dry firewood, and use raised chairs to keep everyone off the cold ground. For fun, bring chalk pastels or use cooled-off charcoal from the fire to draw on paper or wood.
