Food Lab: What Is Really in Your Food is a 45 minute, fully hands-on science program for grades 6 to 8 that supports a food and nutrition unit. Working in teams of four, students measure the hidden sugar in popular drinks, pull real iron out of breakfast cereal with a magnet, test everyday foods for starch and fat, compare the vitamin C in juices, decode real nutrition labels, and see how enzymes break down protein. Every student runs the tests themselves and leaves with a take-home card for testing foods at home. The program is delivered at your school in three sessions of about 32 students each and includes two instructors, all materials and supplies, setup and cleanup. No food is eaten during the program.
