About this event
This course is designed for writers of fiction or creative nonfiction who wish to emerge as better writers. Through discussion, sharing, and some short, fun writing exercises, participants will gain insight into what makes good creative writing. We will explore the use of language, character development, dialogue, setting, and openings and resolutions. Short pieces by both contemporary and classic masters will be read and discussed. Presentations of student writing will be read in class. In a respectful manner, students will discuss the presented student writing, analyzing ways in which the piece was successful and places where the work could be improved. By identifying the key elements of effective fiction and recognizing them in others’ stories, one’s own writing and editing skills will grow. Internet access to a few assigned readings is required. Students should bring 12 copies of a short, original writing sample to the first class. Albert Waitt is the author of the critically acclaimed LT Nichols mystery series, published by Level Best Books, as well as the literary novel, Summer to Fall. His short fiction has been published by The Literary Review, Third Coast, The Beloit Fiction Journal, and more. He holds an MA in Creative Writing from Boston University and has years of experience leading writing workshops.
