Experience: Intermediate – Must have completed the “Introduction to Wood Carving” class, or have similar intermediate-level experience with wood carving tools, techniques and safety. Carve festive holiday Santa Ornaments in time for the Christmas season! In this hands-on course taught by an experienced wood carver and instructor, you will start with Basswood blanks and work through the steps to hand carve them into happy Santa ornaments for yourself, or as a special gift in time for the holiday season. Depending upon each student’s individual progress, several ornaments will be completed, with blanks provided for 4 per student. The wood, paint, cut-resistant glove and carving tools are all provided. The instructor will guide you through the steps to lay out the pattern, shape, detail and finish your Santa ornaments. With a small class size you will have the benefit of ample one-on-one coaching and guidance, learning some tips, tricks and techniques that you will be able to apply to future projects you may start on your own. You may bring your own carving tools, which must be reviewed and approved by the Instructor prior to use in the classroom. Doug Philp has been a wood carver for over 16 years, showing and selling his creations through a variety of galleries, as well as on commission. Using wood rescued from the landfill or burn pile, his work includes everything from caring birds, tree spirits, and santas, to wooden signs, walking sticks, and free-form sculptures. Experienced in adult education, he is now focusing on his passion for woodcarving.
