In this class students will learn clay sculpting techniques and will explore how to express their ideas sculpturally. Students will build clay sculptures using elements like figures, animals, plants, or personal symbols to represent ideas or storylines that can be real, fiction, or both. This class is for all levels - from beginners to advanced. Everyone will receive individual guidance to bring their vision to life. You do not need to have experience or a specific sculpture idea! During the first class there will be a presentation and discussion about representational sculpture, how narratives are conveyed in art, and the use of symbols and metaphor in sculpture. We will look at sources from ancient myths to modern surrealism to inspire you and then there will be time to sketch and consult about ideas. If you do have a specific idea for a sculpture, this is a great class to focus on it with guidance.
