German language competency required to enroll in German B2: Advanced: Understanding: The language learner should be able to understand descriptions of persons and objects, and follow pros and cons of situations and topics. Over the course of the year, vocabulary and comprehension will expand to cover topics such as the EU, immigration, relationships, daily routines, travel, health and diet, and current events on TV and radio. Speaking: The language learner should be able to share different points of view on topics like the environment, the EU, immigration, and relationships, and progress to being able to contribute to almost any kind of discussion. Reading: The language learner should be able to read more complex articles, and by the end of the year be able to read almost any kind of book or newspaper article, using a dictionary as needed. Writing: The language learner should be able to write essays of 500–1,000 words, share his/her point of view, and express opinions in any kind of writing style, including email and letter formats. Grammar: Topics covered over the course of the year include: pronominal adverbs, reflexive pronouns, genitive, future I, subjunctive II, subordinate clauses with während and seit, participle as an adjective, conjunctive II in past tense, conjunctive II in past tense with modal verbs, and causal conjunctions.
