This is a beginner course for adult students. No German language competencies are required to enroll in the Fall Semester. By the Spring Semester, the following competencies are expected: Understanding: The language learner should be able to understand simple everyday situations such as grocery shopping, birthday celebrations, and family life. The language learner should also be familiar with numbers and ordinal numbers. Speaking: The language learner should be able to introduce him- or herself and speak in short sentences about everyday situations such as grocery shopping, birthday celebrations, and family life. The language learner should be able to count and apply ordinal numbers for dates such as birthdays. Reading: The language learner should be able to read simple sentences about daily situations such as grocery shopping, birthday celebrations, and family life. Writing: The language learner should be able to write simple sentences in present and past tense and apply the correct use of upper and lower-case words in sentences. Grammar: The language learner should be able to apply separable verbs, present and past tense with correct sentence structure. The language learner should be familiar with the accusative case.
