About this event

We are excited to announce ‘DEDIMUS POTESTATEM’ our resident speech & debate support will be introducing chess to our Spring catalogue this year! Chess improves critical thinking skills, the willingness to take initiative, and the ability to adapt and solve problems creatively. Studies by Dianne Horgan, Ph.D., found that Chess improves a child’s visual memory and attention span and encourages students to be resilient and opportunity minded. Studies have also shown that chess is a meditative activity that improves focus, reflection, and test scores. Our hour-long multi-media sessions are ideal for students who want to compete or who I just want to improve their chess.com metrics. Lessons include challenging puzzles, a Socratic-based hands-on teaching method where students are actively engaged, and ample time to apply the tactics they have learned with peers in play. Educator biography: Lawrence Chechere is a USCF life master from Chicago. He earned the fide master title while working in Switzerland for three years before Settling in New York. As a chess instructor, he specializes in opening line development and preparation, positional strategies, and endgames. He is the father of two active tournament players in high school and has instructed students as young as Five years old, teens as well as adults. He has a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Illinois - Urbana, where he studied machine learning. We are excited to be introducing such an exciting and stimulating program into this year’s catalogue! Please contact your auxiliary coordinator directly for any further questions.
