How do you usually react when times get tough? What kind of conversations do you have with yourself inside when you're struggling? Do you have a voice of an inner critic that arises?
The overwhelming majority of us feel it's much easier to offer compassion to friends when they're struggling than to offer compassion to ourselves. What would it be like to receive the same caring attention from yourself when you need it most? All that’s required is a shift in attention—recognizing that as a human being, you too are a worthy recipient of compassion. Self-compassion involves the capacity to comfort and soothe ourselves, and to motivate ourselves with encouragement, when we suffer, fail, or feel inadequate. Fortunately, self-compassion is a skill that we all can learn.
Based on the pioneering research of Dr. Kristen Neff, the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) Short Course includes short talks, experiential exercises, short meditations (5-10 minutes), group discussion, and brief, at-home practices emphasizing the integration of self-compassion into everyday life. The MSC Short Course consists of 6 weekly, 90-minute classes and is an adaptation of the evidence-based, 8-week MSC course with 180-minute classes. The MSC Short Course is geared to introduce the self-compassion practices and make them more accessible for people short on time and hesitant about making such a large weekly commitment.
The Mindful Self-Compassion course draws on the practices of mindfulness and develops the resource of self-compassion. With the MSC practices, we can become aware of difficult emotions, recognize the common humanity in our struggles, and accept ourselves with greater kindness and compassion. Numerous research studies show that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being, coping with life challenges, lower levels of anxiety and depression, healthy habits such as diet and exercise, and more satisfying personal relationships. It is an inner strength that enables us to be more fully human—more fully ourselves.
MSC is designed for the general public, and prior meditation experience is not necessary to participate. Graduates of the UW Health 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class are also invited and can benefit enormously from the MSC class. The MSC program is based on the values of shared humanity and inclusiveness. All are welcome.

This session will follow CDC guidelines and UW Health screenings that are in effect at the time of the class session.
