About this event
Step into a real engineering lab and learn how ideas become objects you can hold. In this advanced design experience, students will work directly with Newton’s Attic founder and professional engineer Bill Cloyd to learn the fundamentals of CAD (Computer-Aided Design). Students will create precise digital models and then bring those designs to life using a powerful waterjet cutter—one of the same tools used in modern manufacturing. Working with materials like glass, wood, steel, and even granite, students will explore how different materials behave and how engineers design for strength, precision, and real-world use. Projects may include custom glass ornaments, layered 3D signs for bedrooms, and other personalized creations that combine creativity with engineering. Along the way, students will develop skills in measurement, layout, tolerances, and design thinking—learning how to move from concept to finished product with accuracy and intention. This is not just a design class—it’s a chance to think, build, and create like a real engineer. For the base price of $395, campers can design and create their own small projects such as 1’ x 1’ wall signs, ornaments, yard signs, and similar items. If your child chooses a larger or specialty project, an additional materials fee may apply. Examples of projects that could require an extra fee include fire pits, furniture, oversized pieces, and light-up signs. We will always contact you for approval before your child begins any project that requires additional materials costs.
