In this class, students will learn the core building blocks of carpentry through the process of constructing an elevated planter box (also known as a trug). We’ll cover layout, measuring, cutting, and fastening, with a strong emphasis on safe and confident tool use throughout. Each step is broken down into clear, manageable parts so students can build understanding as they build their project. Along the way, we’ll introduce a range of commonly used hand and power tools and explain how and why they’re used. The skills learned in this class are highly transferable to a wide range of carpentry, woodworking, and DIY projects. Students will leave with a completed planter box and a solid foundation to continue building on their own. Students will build their own elevated planter out of 1x and 2x material. Building the planter will provide practice in cross-cutting, cutting angles, and fastening using screws. Students under 18 may attend with parental permission.
