One of the most powerful and versatile tools in the woodworking shop is the table saw. It is also one of the most dangerous. At Hammerstone, we believe that dangerous tools should be respected, but not feared nor avoided. This one-day skills intensive will familiarize students with the safe use of the table saw through demonstration and ample hands-on experience. We start this course by walking through the safety features of our SawStop brand table saws. We introduce safe ripping and crosscutting techniques by first demonstrating, then having the group observe as each student makes their first cuts under supervision. Finally, as students become more comfortable with the tool, we divide into supervised stations and process all the materials for our course project, an apple crate. By the end of class, students have several hours of table saw use under their belts. The primary objective of this class is to provide students with ample hands-on experience on a variety of table saws. We will learn basic technique on scrap wood, and then hone our skills by processing 2x4 lumber into the material needed to build an apple crate (lots of rip- and cross-cuts). The apple crate is the perfect size for many objects other than apples: your yarn stash, LPs, stuffies. Students under 18 may attend with parental permission.
