About this event
In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of blacksmithing while forging a simple hook. Using heat and hammers, you will mold and shape the metal. This process is quite unlike woodworking, in which you can remove material and glue pieces together, but cannot squish and stretch. Mark Teece is an accomplished blacksmith and former college chemistry professor. His teaching style melds well with Hammerstone's. Mark gives instruction when needed, and is supportive as students experiment and test the boundaries of materials and tools while they work. This class will introduce you to blacksmithing and working with hot iron to make useful household objects. You will learn techniques like drawing out, bending, twisting, and more to create tulip hooks to take home with you. We will also cover correct hammer technique, and use of anvils, vises, and tongs. After some wire brushing and cleaning, you'll coat the hook in a hot wax finish. Expect to leave with basic forging skills and the knowledge needed to forge hot steel. If you have prior experience this class will help you refresh your skills. In this class students forge a traditional tulip hook using blacksmithing techniques. Students under 18 may attend with parental permission.
