Description

Discover the creative possibilities of working in three dimensions! In this 10-week, hands-on class, beginners will learn how to transform air-dry clay into original sculptural works while developing a strong foundation in form, structure, texture, and design.
Participants will explore essential sculpture and pottery techniques, including shaping and building forms, creating structural supports, adding texture and detail, smoothing surfaces, repairing cracks, and sealing finished work. Each class will include instruction and demonstrations, followed by generous studio time for participants to develop their own projects with individualized guidance. No previous sculpture experience is needed.
All work will be completed during class, and unfinished projects and materials will be stored onsite in Room 311 between sessions. No need to transport delicate pieces back and forth. Want extra time to work on your art? Bring your current project and enjoy creative time alongside fellow artists during the Open Studio, Wednesdays in the Art Studio from 9am – 2pm.
The workshop will be taught by Dr. Hani Elkadi and Heather Henry Winter. Hani is an accomplished artist, poet, educator, and retired organ transplant surgeon, who received his art education in Italy, Holland, and the University of Iowa. A long-time artist, in addition to teaching art, for twenty years he wrote and illustrated a regular weekly column for the Press-Citizen and produced and hosted the local TV program "Education Exchange" for 27 years. Heather is a Kalona-based painter and sculptor with vast artistic experience and a Master's in Education. In addition to her professional training in the techniques of sculpting, she brings a thoughtful and encouraging approach shaped by belief in art's power to foster healing, resilience, and creativity.
