The Iowa City New Horizons Band, with director Courtney Ridge, a doctoral student in Wind Conducting in the UI School of Music, will be in concert at the IC Senior Center Assembly Room on Tuesday, December 9, at 2:00 p.m. The exciting and challenging selection of pieces to be performed by the band will include several wind band standards as well as some more recent compositions, with the various moods of the pieces taking listeners on a journey from strikingly stirring to subtly sublime. The concert will also include pieces led by two U of I undergraduate music students, Ella Boesen and Tony Wang, who were selected by the School of Music to have the opportunity to work with the band this semester. It’s a tremendous learning experience for these young conductors, and working with them gives band members great joy. In addition to this performance, you are also invited to a concert featuring a number of smaller ensembles affiliated with the band. This Ensemble Concert with be in the Senior Center Assembly Room on Thursday, December 4, at 2:00 p.m. and will feature various woodwind and brass ensembles.The Iowa City New Horizons Band’s final appearance of the year will be in a Holiday Concert performed jointly with the Iowa City Community Band on Sunday, December 21, at 2:00 p.m. at the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City.
