Today, Dakota County is one of the safest counties of its size in the nation—but that wasn’t always the case. From the 1800s through the mid-1900s, the area had a “Wild West” reputation, with gangsters, bootleggers, swindlers, and even notorious names like Jesse James, Ma Barker, and John Dillinger passing through local communities. This presentation by local historian Joe Atkins looks back at those times—not to glorify crime, but to remember victims, honor courageous law enforcement and citizens, and appreciate how far our county has come. Presented by local historian Joe Atkins. Ice cream from Hometown Sweets will be provided at the conclusion.
