Description
Program OverviewThe Indy Art Center Teacher Institute is an immersive, studio-based professional development experience for K–12 art educators. Over five days, teachers engage in hands-on art making across multiple professional studios while also exploring curriculum design, assessment, classroom management strategies, and creative renewal.
This institute is designed to refuel teachers as artists, expand their technical skillsets, and provide immediately transferable ideas for the classroom.
Participants will:
- Reconnect with their identity as artists
- Learn new media techniques aligned to school-appropriate adaptations
- Develop standards-aligned lesson plans and assessments
- Explore inclusive and choice-based teaching strategies
- Build a professional network of fellow art educators
- Leave with finished artwork, lesson plans, and renewed inspiration
- Receive 30+ hours of professional development
Daily Structure Morning: Studio IntensivesMidday: Lunch & collaborationAfternoon: PD sessions + open studio
Workshops: Drawing & mixed-media exploration Low-pressure, process-driven approaches Sketchbook strategies for the classroom
Handbuilding & surface design in clay
Coil, slab, texture, and low-fire adaptations
Relief printmaking or Gelly Printing Paper, fabric, and found-material printing
Digital Design Using ProcreateDigital drawing and painting using Procreate Layering, brushes, color, and texture exploration
PD Sessions:
The Artist-Teacher Mindset Focus: Creative identity, community building, and studio practice Avoiding burnout Building sustainable creative habits
Teaching 3D in Limited Spaces Focus: Clay & Sculptural Thinking Kiln access alternatives Air-dry and low-budget options
Assessment Without Killing Creativity Focus: Taking the focus off of the grade Rubrics that support process Student self-assessment & critique models
Digital Art in the K–12 ClassroomFocus: Building confidence with digital tools Differentiation across grade levels Managing shared devices and equitable access
Beyond the Project: Teaching for Artistic Thinking Focus: Learn strategies to encourage inquiry, experimentation, and revision Explore the difference between projects and artistic thinking experiences Identify key habits of mind used by artists and designers
