About this event
Description
Become a certified bird nerd! This new, one-of-a-kind, Master Birder series at the Ornithology Center is for new hobbyists, backyard enthusiasts, and long-time birders alike. Although not associated with the DNR's Indiana Master Naturalist class, it is modeled after this program, which includes indoor lectures, outdoor lessons, volunteer/field experience hours (15 required), and a final exam in order to earn a certification at the end of the course. Course instructors include Ornithology Center staff, volunteers, University of Indianapolis professor Dr. Stephen Nawrocki, and other local bird experts. Bring your own binder for printed materials. Binoculars provided to borrow!
Program meets a total of five Wednesdays, 6pm-9pm, March 25-May 20th. Tentative Schedule:3/25 Birding 101, Taxonomy, Feeder Birds, Raptors4/8 Bird Anatomy/Physiology, Skulls, Waterfowl, Shorebirds4/22 Conservation, Nests, Swallows, Flycatchers, Woodpeckers, etc.5/6 Migration, Feathers, Warblers and other tiny birds5/20 Songs, Mimids, Corvids, Blackbirds, Sparrows, etc.
Extra optional activities:4/22 5-6pm Earth Day Hike (trash clean up, garlic mustard pull, etc.)5/2-5/3 BIRD FEST at the Ornithology Center, various public hikes and classes, schedule coming soon!*Other possible opportunities to get your required 15 hours of field experience will be announced during the course as well.
A portion of each class will be outside. So be sure to wear trail shoes and comfortable clothes.
