Instructor: Caroline Gates Skill Level: All Levels Medium: Oil Paint Total Class Hours: 15 Description: In this painting class, students will learn how to create a classic still life using traditional oil painting techniques. Over the course of five weeks, students will take a work from a grisaille (monochromatic underpainting) through a fully glazed piece. We will discuss how to use composition to suggest a narrative, how to think through color theory principles, and how to understand the nature of oil paint itself. I use short demonstrations, handouts, and one-on-one instruction in each of my classes. I also believe in using old master examples, so I often like to show images by artists from Chardin to Cezanne, so that students understand there are a variety of ways to approach painting, and we are just learning one method. This class is perfect for complete beginners and experienced painters looking to brush up on their skills.
