Experience the historic art of Blacksmithing with a custom made coal forge! Explore the unique properties of metals like silver, titanium, and gold. From pouring molten zinc to electroplating copper, we will delve into the theory and practice of the most fascinating aspects of metallurgy. A large portion of this class will focus on forging steel with hammer and anvil. From fire maintenance and tool use to techniques for moving metal, we aim to create a solid foundation and appreciation for the smithing arts. Students can expect to receive the rewards of any fledgling smith, which is to say, a very sore arm, some minor burns, and a few hard won manifestations of their effort. During the heat of the day, we will go inside and through demonstration and practice learn the basics of alloying, electroplating, casting, and anodizing. After a brief discussion on the science of these disciplines, students will each get to take home a small ornament that they make using all of these techniques. This class will follow the seven thousand year path that turned rocks into skyscrapers and magic into science. From mechanical to electrochemical, we will shape and alter the hardest materials on earth!
