Six IN-PERSON sessions September 15, 22, 29, October 6, 13, 20 The abolitionist press was not a single thing. It was a contested, internally divided, sometimes contradictory set of arguments about who could speak, on what authority, in what voice, and toward what end. This course follows those arguments across four decades, exploring the relationship between journalism and justice and how a society changes its mind about something it believed it could not change. Kevin Johnson is a recovering journalist and retired journalism educator. He has taught journalism, long-form nonfiction writing and journalism history at universities in South Carolina and Georgia. He holds a master of fine arts degree in narrative media writing from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. This is his second BULLI course.
