Six IN-PERSON Sessions September 16, 23, 30, October 7, 14, 21 “If a book told you something when you were fifteen,” says Ursula K. LeGuin, “it will tell you it again when you’re fifty, though you may understand it so differently that it seems you’re reading a whole new book.” As mature adults we may approach literary texts that we read as high school or college students with different questions and different interpretations. Some of these texts may have left us feeling indifferent or mystified; now we view them with fresh perspective. In this course we will reexamine some of those classics, including poems by Robert Frost, T. S. Eliot, Emily Dickinson, and others; and short stories by Shirley Jackson, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Flannery O’Connor, John Cheever, Leo Tolstoy, and Eudora Welty. All materials will be furnished. After teaching English Composition, American Literature, and Women's Studies for well over 30 years at a community college in Pensacola, Karen Sirmans has found a new calling in teaching mature adults in BULLI classes. She takes great joy in discussing thorny literary questions and challenging decisions made by literary characters, encouraging all students to participate in the discussions.
