Hidden in the greenways, parks, and backyards of Nashville are several varieties of stunning native orchids. The vibrant flower has been revered for centuries for its exoticism and inspirational qualities. But these treasures, long part of rich folkloric traditions, have been largely forgotten by many Nashvillians. Come hear author of "Nashville Native Orchids: Astonishing Science and Mysterious Folklore" share her knowledge and enthusiasm. You'll learn how to find, identify, and conserve native orchids in your neighborhood.Presenter and Author: Soraya Cates ParrSoraya Cates Parr has a Bachelor's degree in Plant and Soil Science from Tennessee Technological University. She then became the Orchid Horticulturist at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, in Nashville, TN. Her articles have appeared in the American Orchid Society’s ORCHIDS magazine and AKWA: The Journal of Aquatic Fitness. Her knowledge of orchids has been featured on both “The Garden Path” for WDCN Channel 8/ Nashville PBS and “Wildlife and Wild Orchids” for WC-TV Williamson County Government Educational Channel. She was an appointed member for two successive terms on the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health for the State of Tennessee.
