Description
Sculpting a Petroglyph in Metal - taught by Paul Smith
This class is a first-time offering and is designed for students who are skilled, versatile and creative. You'll be utilizing all the various silversmithing skills you've acquired, as well as being tasked with using your creative and interpretive skills. You'll be creating a 3-dimensional metal sculpture of a petroglyph or pictograph inspired by various sites across the country. Petroglyphs are an early art form in which ancient Americans carved depictions of their lifestyle and heritage onto rocks, some of which are over 5,000 years old.
Be prepared to enjoy wax sculpting to create a replica or interpretation of a petroglyph from these historical sites. You can incorporate various materials, including bronze, silver and copper in your sculpture. The final step will involve applying a patina to the sculpture.
By creating this sculpture, you are learning to appreciate these records of early Americans, as well as learning the answers to questions such as "How Old is Rock Art?", "How Were They Made?", "What Do They Mean?".
Pre-requisites: Students should be competent in general silversmithing techniques, including sawing, filing, soldering and using both the large & small torches. It would be helpful, but not required, for the student to have had some instruction in lost-wax, Delft Clay or cuttlebone casting.
Required Tools for Class : Students must bring basic silversmithing tools, including files, saws, bench pin and a motorized hand tool, such as a Foredom or Dremel with a flexible shaft. (Club Foredoms will be used for demonstrations.)
Supply Fee: Each student will have the option of working in silver, bronze and/or cooper. The estimated cost will start at $25.00 and go upwards depending on your choice of metal. Reach out to Paul Smith at 817-733-5368 to arrange for your supplies a least one week before the class start date.
