The Sistrunk 5K is a run/walk that takes place along one of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County’s most historically significant corridors. Serving as the kickoff event for a full day of programming known as the Sistrunk Festival, the race invites runners and walkers to traverse five kilometers down Sistrunk Boulevard, passing historic markers and notable African American heritage sites that reflect the rich cultural legacy of Broward County.
The event has been renamed the Desorae Giles Smith 5K presented by All-Star Classic in honor of the race’s founder whose vision and leadership established the run/walk as a cornerstone community event. Ms. Giles-Smith tragically passed away last year from pancreatic cancer, and this renamed event serves both as a tribute to her legacy and a continuation of her commitment to community health, culture, and unity.
A portion of the proceeds from the Desorae Giles Smith 5K will be donated to support pancreatic cancer research, ensuring that the event not only celebrates history and community but also contributes to life-saving efforts in her memory.
