In 1920, the Pifer sisters began leading hikes for guests staying at YMCA. Now, 101 years later, we are following their footsteps and leading one of the hikes they were known to lead.. Their route is no longer viable: it would be off-trail and on private property at times, and their refreshment locations are now historical artifacts. Nonetheless, it is possible to celebrate their initiative and the beginnings of the Y hiking program by summiting Longs from the Y, but doing so on modern trails. We will remember the Pifer sisters, celebrate 101 years of Y hiking excellence, and experience the endless lure of Longs Peak with a 23 mile round trip, 6,300-foot net gain, trek from the Y to the summit of Longs Peak.

To meet the prerequisite for A-D hikes, you must have completed without difficulty a YMCA of the Rockies (Hikemaster-lead) hike of no more than two grades lower within two weeks before the hike. This means a C hike is the prerequisite for an A hike; a D hike is a prerequisite for B hike; an E hike is a prerequisite for a C hike, and an F hike meets the requirements for a D hike.
Hikes graded A-D must have three guests, and hikes graded E-H must have two guests to go. This is for safety reasons. Hikes will be canceled if too few guests sign up.
A variety of circumstances may change the schedule of this hike. It is imperative that all hikers check in at the Mountain Center hiking desk (Base Camp) no later than 5 pm the day before the hike. If your hike is scheduled to leave before Mountain Center open hours, please enter through the side door on the north side of the building.
