Playing the five-string banjo is a blast! If you’ve got a yen for learning to play the five-string that has been sitting in a closet, your time has arrived! Even if you don’t have a banjo, your time is now! We can help you find one if you’re keen to learn to play this magical instrument. Our program is an introduction to the five-string banjo for absolute beginners (be aware - a four-string banjo won’t do for this course). Together with Duncan Perry, your instructor, you’ll cover banjo setup, tuning, and care, then focus on learning the folk style playing popularized by Pete Seeger, and explore the clawhammer style used by country and old-time enthusiasts like Grandpa Jones, Riley Baugus, and Rhiannon Giddens.
