Howard County History: The Anti-Saloon League and Prohibition in Howard County

The 18th Amendment was driven by the dramatic increase in alcohol consumption with the availability of hard liquor in the 19th Century. Maryland was unique among the states that ratified the amendment in that it did not legislate its enforcement. Learn about the efforts of numerous temperance groups, including the Anti-Saloon League, to ban alcohol consumption in Howard County and other parts of Maryland, and how Ellicott City became a “bootleggers paradise.”
