Paddle the tidal marshes of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on this one-day flat water trip. Enjoy the scenery of mixed evergreen and deciduous forest, home to the Bald Eagle and endangered Delmarva Fox Squirrel. Beginner and intermediate kayakers welcome; all paddlers must complete our paddling basics class or Encore Adventures Kayaking Club before the trip.
All equipment supplied for use during the program, including single kayaks for each participant. Tandem Kayaks available by request – contact us when registering. Info: Matt Medicus, 410-313-1769 or mmedicus@howardcountymd.gov.
Other river trips not specific to 50+ available for adults on weekends –see page 75 in the HCRP Fall Activity Guide.
Visit www.tinyurl.com/HCRPAdventure for more Adventure & Outdoor opportunities including Nite Bite Fishing! Scroll down for more important program notes.
Encore Adventures are your opportunity to dabble in a variety of outdoor skills! Try your hand at paddling a kayak, learn the basics of archery, get a grip on our indoor rock climbing wall and much more. Earn a certificate for completing at least five Encore Adventure activities within a two-year period.
Minimal swimming ability required – we do not intentionally capsize the boats but kayaks can and do flip over. Life jackets are provided and required.
This trip includes paddling tidal water with possibly some small waves/wind but no river features such as rocks or riffles. This is an out-and-back trip; overall length and time on the water determined by conditions and speed of the group but paddlers should be prepared for 3-4hrs in the kayak. We will eat lunch in the boats.
Detailed info is emailed to the participant about a week prior to the trip. Fee is per person, which includes transportation, leadership and boat; bring a lunch (no nut products) and beverage. All equipment provided for use during the program; paddlers may bring their life jacket pending approval by instructor. You must have completed our Encore Adventures Paddling Basics class or Kayaking Club, Friends & Family Adventure in kayaking or HCRP equivalent prior to this trip. You may register for this paddling trip at the same time you register for a Paddling Basics class, but you must physically complete the Basics class or HCRP equivalent BEFORE the trip.
