Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) grows up in the Midwest learning baseball from his father, whose sudden death inspires Roy to craft a bat from a lightning-struck tree, naming it Wonderboy. In 1923, he leaves his girlfriend Iris to pursue a tryout with the Chicago Cubs. After striking out legendary slugger “The Whammer,” Roy attracts dangerous attention from Harriet Bird, who shoots him in a Chicago hotel, derailing his promising baseball career.
