Hanabi teaches judo technique, culture, and character. As we jump, run, and roll we develop balance, coordination and confidence. And we have fun! We start out learning our names in Japanese then do movement exercises and judo techniques that teach us to fall safely. We place a strong emphasis on culture so everyone speaks the language of Japan: we learn to “nete” (lie down) and to “tonde” (leap) like a “raion” (lion). Judo allows a smaller person to control an opponent bigger and stronger than themselves. We practice throws where our opponent can be flipped upside down – on Sensei. Every class finishes with games that develop physical coordination, balance and laughter. We sing in Japanese and bow to each other respectfully. Then we say “arigotoh” (thank you). In our positive culture respect and discipline are as much a part of Hanabi as smiling. Upper Campus Honto (“Real”) is our higher level class for more experienced students. This class, which offers the opportunity to do more advance judo, is a step up, a challenge and a lot of fun! "Hanabi" means fireworks in Japanese: its energy, brightness and excitement truly express the spirit of our judo. Head Sensei, Dan Augustine The head instructor, 6th degree black belt Dan Augustine, won the US Sr. National Championship in 1984 and was the alternate to the 1988 Olympics. But more importantly, he is a father of three children who grew up in Oakland. He has taught in New York, Tokyo and Oakland. He holds a Master's Degree in Education and speaks Japanese and Spanish. Lead Instructor, Yurii Buhrov Yurii Sensei had his own dojo for 10 years in Ukraine, producing national champions and world level competitors. He holds 3 masters’ degrees and is undertaking a PhD in judo. He has been with Hanabi for 4 years where he has taught hundreds of our students including many national champions.
