This lecture invites adult learners to step into the lush, curving world of Art Nouveau, the international style that swept across Europe and America from the 1890s to World War I. Characterized by sinuous lines, organic motifs, and the unification of the fine and decorative arts, Art Nouveau sought to erase the boundary between art and life. Through the works of Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, HectoFliver Guimard, Antoni Gaudí, and others, participants will examine how this movement reflected a rapidly modernizing world and how its ideals seeded later modernist and contemporary aesthetics.
