During the Civil War, in September 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee crossed the Potomac River and invaded the Union state of Maryland. Lee wanted to turn Maryland to the Confederacy. It did not go as he hoped, with much of the population indifferent, or hostile, to the Rebel army. And then came the Battle of Antietam.
