In this three hour workshop, we will start with a quick overview of the botanical print process and then proceed to design and bundle a 8”x54” silk charmeuse scarf. Our dye blanket with be soaked in the “reds” (cochineal, lac, sappanwood).
While the scarves steam, we will discuss which natural dyes, plants, flowers and fibers are especially effective in botanical printmaking. This discussion will include information on mordants, tannins and assists. Using PFD pieces of fabric, participants will experiment with different dyes. Finally, each participant will unbundle their finished scarves to see and discuss results.
All materials provided, however participants are free to bring leaves/flowers to incorporate into their scarves.
