$15 LAB FEE DUE AT FIRST CLASS This class is for the beginner or the experienced bookmaker who would like a refresher on bookbinding techniques and structures. There will be three 8-week sessions, each with a different focus. This is Part 2 of a 3-Part series.
Learn the basics of making handmade journals. The complete process starting with paper and book board to how to assemble text blocks, make jig templates and how to glue decorative paper or book cloth onto the book board covers. Binding variations include the Coptic stitch, stitching over tapes and the French Link stitch. Throughout the class we will consider design options for the front cover. In addition, learn how to make handmade book cloth.
Class Objective:
• Learn the basics of sewing a text block to hard covers with different binding techniques. • Adhesives: suggested ratios of PVA to paste depending on the materials to be glued. • How to make your own book cloth using paper and paste to back your fabric. • Design techniques for the front cover; create a recessed panel or raised cutout shapes.
Materials instructor provides: book board; paste and adhesive; waxed linen thread; a couple cutting mats and rulers; painter’s tape; weights (bricks covered with paper); Masonite boards.
