About this event

Description

Did you know that Elkridge once was a bustling port for ocean-going vessels, that over 40 mills once lined the banks of the Patapsco River from Sykesville to Elkridge, or that the farmland surrounding the valley included many plantations which relied upon enslaved labor? Did you know that the Industrial Revolution, the first rail terminus, and the first national road began here? The Patapsco River Valley owes much of it’s rich history to the unique physical geography of the region. From John Smith’s exploration of the river in 1608 to the devastating flood of 1868, learn how geography has influenced the historical, economic, and cultural development in the Valley. Join former Howard County Historical Society Executive Director Dr. Mark Stout for an interactive session that explores the region’s rich history. Participants will analyze primary sources, see how our physical geography supported both a plantation-based economy and industrial development, and see fascinating visuals that question current narratives about the Valley’s past. Free, registration required.
