About this event
Led by Chicago-based dance artist Erin Kilmurray, this workshop explores the kinetic energy of the dance floor through pulse, rhythm, repetition, momentum, anticipation, iteration, and accumulation. This workshop welcomes experienced dancers ages 18+ who self-identify as intermediate/advanced. No audition is required. Rooted in community-centered and collaborative movement methods, Kilmurray’s practice collides contemporary dance, queer nightlife, storytelling, and social dancing frameworks—the intuitive movement that emerges when we move together in a crowd: twirls, footwork, floorwork, hair whips, bounce, groove, pulse, shifts of weight, gestures, and impulses that travel from one body to another. Structured around the arc of a single night, we will trace how energy moves through a collective space: energy gathers, relationships form, rhythms build, identities emerge, choices create change. And then—what happens when things diverge, shift, or fall apart? Developed alongside Kilmurray’s current work-in-process, this workshop introduces participants to the foundations of their practice through set choreographic phrasing, independent devising exercises, and improvisational scores. These practices build toward a culminating choreographic structure, accompanied by a live sound score from legendary Chicago house/techno DJ Ariel Zetina. Each day includes a warm-up class, choreographic and improvisational practice, a lunch break, and time for collective reflection and discussion. Participants may be considered for future development and performance of the work. Workshop Fee: $135 Please contact intensives@hubbardstreetdance.com if this cost is prohibitive.
