Leader: Rick Borchelt Swallowtails are some of our most iconic and — as a group — best known butterflies. Some are easily recognized, but several others form a complicated mimicry ring (with a few other non-swallowtail butterflies) centered on the black and blue colors of the toxic Pipevine Swallowtail. Still others show ongoing active speciation that has created a confusing taxonomic mess we increasingly think of as the “eastern tiger swallowtail complex.” Join us for an evening of discussion of the life histories and identification of our nine (and counting!!) mid-Atlantic swallowtails, followed by a Saturday field trip to see some of these species in the field.
