About this event
Over the course of the week’s progression, your child will receive paddling skills instruction beginning with flatwater canoeing strokes & maneuvers and building to whitewater canoeing strokes & maneuvers (up to Class II+), rafting & kayaking concepts (on whitewater days, participants will rotate between tandem canoes, inflatable kayaks, and a raft), whitewater safety, swimming, and self-rescue basics, and Leave No Trace principles. Activities take place at a variety of locations around Chattanooga, with transportation provided via 15-passenger van. Paddling gear (excluding footwear and clothing) will be provided. We will intentionally be out exploring rain or shine, which will provide excellent learning opportunities. Severe weather may necessitate shore-based learning on certain days. PREREQUISITES: Participants should have previous experience paddling in the stern of a tandem canoe (steering) on flatwater, as well as previous exposure to paddling in whitewater (any craft). Capsizing is almost guaranteed as participants learn tandem whitewater canoeing skills (an excellent technical and teamwork challenge), so participants must be prepared to swim in cold whitewater! If you have questions whether this experience is appropriate for your child, please give us a call! PLEASE NOTE: Times for Monday & Tuesday's camp will be 9:00am-4:00pm. Times for Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday will be 9:00am-6:00pm. Severe weather may necessitate shore-based learning on certain days.
