The primary objective of the Fieldston Enrichment Program is to prepare its students for entrance into and success in college preparatory programs, especially but not exclusively those at independent schools and specialized high schools. To that end, FEP offers a structured approach that combines academic enrichment and leadership activities; personal discipline and responsibility; community service and recreation. Commitment to the students extends beyond the Fieldston campus. FEP teachers and a cadre of alumni volunteers serve as mentors to the young people and their families, both inside and outside the program’s “four walls.” The staff also works closely with the students’ families to offer the young people the social and emotional support necessary if they are to succeed academically. Parents are provided with structured activities that are designed to increase and scaffold their knowledge and awareness of additional educational options and opportunities, as their children progress through the program. FEP alumni volunteers provide current students tutorial help and share their knowledge of secondary school, college, and life experiences with FEP students. They also serve as tutors/mentors for the students in the Saturday math, science and English classes where they receive instruction in logic problems, scientific inquiry, research, oratory skills, literacy skills, assigned readings and power point presentations of major assignments. Program Details FEP meets on the Fieldston campus in Riverdale, in the Bronx, for 30 six-hour Saturday sessions during the school year and four weeks during the month of July. For many of our students, the program itself, along with Fieldston’s campus, facilities and wooded, residential surroundings, is a safe haven during the summer month of July. Sometimes their own neighborhoods present numerous negative influences, always present but particularly keen during out-of-school time.
