About this event
There are three battles you must be prepared to face when you defend yourself against a violent attacker: the physical fight for your life, the legal battle, and the mental and emotional struggle that come afterward. “Aftermath of a Self-Defense Shooting” explores what happens legally after someone defends themselves against an attacker. Even when the use of deadly force is justified, a homicide has still occurred, and a legal process will follow to determine whether that force was lawful. Even in what seems like the clearest case of self-defense—such as a home invasion with no apparent gray areas—there is still a formal investigation. Many people assume that defending your home automatically protects you from any repercussions. However, a legal process will still take place. You will likely be questioned and treated as a suspect. Your firearm will be seized as evidence. Your home will be designated a crime scene, and you will be denied access to it for a period of time. But what happens if there is a gray area—if the situation doesn’t look as clear-cut as you believed? What if you find yourself facing criminal charges? The criminal justice system can be complex, intimidating, and difficult to navigate. Learn what happens inside a courtroom—and what life is like inside a jail cell—so you can better understand the full reality of defending yourself.
