Painting: Watercolor Level 4
Instructor: Diane Roach Smith
The class will be centered around, independent painting with Instructor guidance. Over the course of the semester, there will be discussions about creating your own art through watercolor painting techniques and styles. There will be some demos to spark creativity. This class will help students be more independent, while fostering creativity and ideas for their own unique art. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas to create a painting with instructor guidance. Intermediate and advanced students are welcome.
It is highly recommended that all the students use professional paints as well as professional 100% cotton rag watercolor paper. There is a materials list for this class; students are required to bring all materials. A class field trip may take place during the semester for one class meeting date.
Prerequisite: Several semesters of Fundamentals of Watercolor / Intro, Level 1 classes, and Level 2-3 classes recommended, w/ Diane Smith or an equivalent of 5 or more semesters of watercolor training.

Paint:I instruct with (PROFESSIONAL)watercolor tubes and a lot of them are transparent staining and non-staining watercolor. The list below is just a suggestion. Please do not go out and buy all these if it is a budget concern. Just make sure they are professional grade and you have a cool and warm of each of the primaries.
I instruct with Windsor and Newton Professional Paints. There are other professional paints available such as Daniel Smith / Holbein/ Schmincke: Horadam.
You will need a Cool and a Warm of the Primaries - Yellow, Red, BlueMost of these are Windsor and Newton Colors. Suggestions are:
Yellow/ Windsor Lemon (Cool)( I personally use Mariblu brand Permanent Lemon - it's a very cool lemon and transparent. I also like Aurilean (cool) and Sennilier brand.)Transparent Yellow (warm)New Gamboge (warm)
Red/ Permanent Alizarin Crimson (warm yellow undertones)Perm Rose(Pink Red)
Blue/ French Ultramarine Blue (warm)Phthalo Blue or Windsor Blue Green Shade(cool)

Leaf Green (Holbein brand)
Burnt Sienna OR Burnt Umber are good browns to have in your box - I often make this color with blue and orange.
Extra Blue Cobalt or (Manganese Blue Hue) I like Daniel Smith brand.
Pallette:A larger square or rectangle palette with at least 8 wells to put the tube paint in it should have a cover. Mijello is a good brand and you can get it on Amazon.I have portable small round painting palettes for sale. I have a few small covered palettes also that you can purchase.
Paper:I suggest using only 100% cotton rag professional paper. Arches is a good paper. The size depends on your budget and or you comfort level for size of painting. #140 lb Cold Press is the lightest that I use.
