Painting: Portrait in Acrylic or Oil - Level 2 & 3

The first half of the semester is designed for experienced students seeking to strengthen
their technical and structural approach to portrait painting. Students will focus on head
construction, anatomy, and accurate proportion while translating drawing skills into paint.
Emphasis is placed on underpainting, value structure, and color temperature to establish
a strong foundation for a successful portrait. Students will work from photo references
and live models.

The last half of the semester builds upon the foundation established in previous weeks,
focusing on refinement, realism, and expressive color. Students will develop surface
quality, subtle color shifts, and lighting effects to enhance depth and character. Emphasis
is placed on edge control, texture, and finishing techniques while encouraging students
to develop a personal approach to portrait painting. Students will complete a series of
expressive portraits demonstrating technical control, strong likeness, and confident,
efficient painting practices.

Prerequisite: Students should be painting at an intermediate / advanced level.
