Painting: Portrait in Acrylic & Oil - Level 2 & 3

The first 4 weeks of this class is designed for
experienced students seeking to strengthen their
technical and structural approach to portrait
painting. Over four weeks, students will focus
on head construction, anatomy, and accurate
proportion while translating drawing skills into
paint. Emphasis is placed on underpainting, value
structure, and color temperature to establish
a strong foundation for a successful portrait.
Students will work from photo references or live
models.
Focus areas first 4 weeks:
• Advanced head construction and facial anatomy
• Value structure and color temperature
• Establishing likeness

The last 4 weeks of this class builds upon the
foundation established in previous weeks, focusing
on refinement, realism, and expressive color.
Over four weeks, students will develop surface
quality, subtle color shifts, and lighting effects to
enhance depth and character. Emphasis is placed
on edge control, texture, and finishing techniques
while encouraging students to develop a personal
approach to portrait painting. By the end of Part
2, students will complete a series of expressive
portraits demonstrating technical control,
strong likeness, and confident, efficient painting
practices.
Focus areas last 4 weeks:
• Advanced color mixing and skin tone variation
• Light, shadow, and expressive lighting
• Edge control, texture, and brush economy
• Developing consistency and personal approach

Prerequisite: Students should be painting at
an intermediate / advanced level.
