Painting: Intermediate Acrylic/ Mixed Media Level 3-4
Instructor: Andrea Tama


This Semester, students will be working with various media and tools to create still life, landscape and non-objective abstract compositions. Mixed media collage materials will be needed, start collecting or making them.

Prerequisite: This is an Advanced Painting Class. You are required to have painted in Acrylic Mixed Media for at least 2 recent years with drawing, color theory, paint mixing and composition class experience. If you are new to the class, you will be required to send me photos of some of your work in advance of the class. (Self-taught painting experience is not equivalent to taking classes.This is not optional.)

1- 16oz. jar of gloss gel medium and 1- 16oz. jar of matte gel medium (in a jar not in a bottle and should be a thicker creamy consistency)

2- NEW: bottle of gloss glazing medium (Liquitex)

*USE ONLY LIQUITEX, GOLDEN OR UTRECHT BRANDS OF PAINT: CAN BE FOUND AT BLICK ARTISTS SUPPLIES OR MICHAEL’S. PLEASE NO BASICS, HUES (UNLESS SPECIFIED), MIXTURES OR ANY OTHER STUDENT GRADE PAINTS OR COLORS. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, EMAIL ME.

Flat (Bright) Hog Hair #12, #10, #8, #6 and #4 and intermediate students should consider #16, #20 or #22

Utrecht Princeton Manglon Synthetic Bright Brushes: #2, #4, #6, #8, #10

Small rubber spatulas: Catalyst by Princeton no handle , white and grey, and #01 Mini Catalyst with a handle.


*First day of class, we will be starting the semester with an abstract mixed media still life. Please collect collage papers, especially handmade. Try not to make too many fancy patterns. It will also be good to have newspapers and magazines handy. Please make sure you restock your paint and mediums! Bring a canvas square or rectangle in our usual sizes. After the first class you will know what else will be needed for the semester.


Misc. Supplies

A roll of Reynolds freezer paper from the market OR a white palette paper pad 11x14

Small rags (wash cloths work best) or roll of paper towel

Masking tape

Air tight storage containers or Tupperware ice cube trays to store paint

*Set of pastel pencils (black, white and light gray) or pastel pencils for drafting on canvas or wood panels

Assorted sizes of palette knives with bend in handle

Small spray bottle

Art gum eraser

Sketchbook and pencil or pen

*Digital Camera or I-phone will be needed

*For those students that do not wish to do the do the suggested suggested curriculum, please talk to me about what you will be doing for the for the semester.

*Please note that there will be more supplies needed for the semester. The curriculum will be discussed the first day of class and is the property of Andrea Tama and may not be shared. Some supplies will be provided by me, but not all.
