Materials for the Term
-Box to carry supplies in- toolbox works nicely
-Pencil and Eraser or vine charcoal (for sketching on canvas)
-Ruler
-Paper towels or rag
-Palette or palette paper
-Palette knife
-Water cup/jar
-Small spray bottle
-Masking or painter’s tape
-Pad of 9x12” acrylic or thick weight watercolor paper
-3 Flat or Angled brushes: 1 large, 1 medium, 1 small (with brush widths of 1”, ½”, ¼”)
- One medium Filbert brush for shading
- *One small round or pointed detail brush (optional)
- *One 2” or 2.5” brush for washes and larger areas
- Set of Acrylic paints- Essentials includes:
[Titanium white, Mars Black, Medium Grey (NOT Light), Cadmium yellow medium, Cadmium red medium, Cobalt blue, Ultramarine Blue, and permanent green].
Orange, Purple/violet, and Burnt Umber are recommended-these and
other colors are welcomed but not necessary and completely your discretion)
- Choose paints you like/can afford:
- Paint options: Artist loft $, Utrecht or Blick $-$$, Liquitex (Basics) $-$$, Winsor
Newton $$, Golden $$-$$$, and Grumbacher $$-$$$
Expense does impact quality, but the cheapest can work. Again, choose
according to your budget & preference.
- *Acrylic medium- fluid (not paste consistency, more liquid like- I use Liquitex brand)
- Canvas/surfaces: You will need 4 surfaces to paint on for projects and paper for
technique practice. I recommend these (sm-med) sizes to begin with, to not feel
overwhelmed… but size is up to your comfort/ambition, understand bigger = more time commitment to finish, but also more impact (!)
- 3 canvases 11x14”
- 1 canvas 16x20” or bigger
