Drawing: Botanical Art Floriography
Instructor: Barbara Holmer

Revive the Victorian ‘Language of Flowers’ by creating accurate botanical drawings in graphite and/or colored pencils. Students will create a composition using plants that convey a coded message. Subjects will be provided for the first class. *Bring all drawing supplies.

Prerequisite: Previous experience using colored pencils.

BOTANICAL ART FLORIOGRAPHY

COLORED PENCIL SUPPLY LIST

GENERAL:

-kneaded eraser

-Tombow Mono eraser

-artist’s tape (not 3M) or white painter’s tape

-sighting stick or divider

-foam core board (approximately 11”x14”) or small drawing board

-.5mm mechanical pencils with leads (HB)

-small (1”) hake brush or other soft brush

-Saral transfer paper or hand made transfer paper


PAPER: * 9”x12” -tracing paper

-Bienfang Graphics 360 Layout Paper (for preliminary drawing and layout)

CHOOSE FROM:

-Stonehenge White (Drawing/Printmaking)

-Hot Press watercolor paper

-Strathmore 400 or 500 series Bristol Board Vellum surface -your favorite good quality

smooth drawing paper

* (NOTE: 9”x12” size is large enough unless you have a specific large project)


SHARPENERS: choose from:

-Staedtler hand held sharpener, 2 hole tub (Staples)

-Carl Custom (hand operated)

-(Mitsubishi) Uni KH-20 (hand operated)

-NuSign (hand operated)

-any sharpener you have that gives a truly SHARP POINT


COLORED PENCILS: Regular colored pencils...NOT water soluble pencils!

-Faber Castell POLYCHROMOS (this is the brand I use;

it is available at Dick Blick in individual colors )

also need:

-Lyra Splender blender (colorless)
