In this thought-provoking course, we’ll explore the fascinating relationship between people and the “stuff” in our lives. Using the perspective of material culture studies, sometimes called “stuff studies, we’ll look at the everyday objects, spaces, habits, and rituals that shape our lives and often reveal more about us than we realize. From what we wear and where we live to how we communicate, what we buy, collect, keep, and even sell, our things can carry stories, memories, identities, and meanings. Through in-depth discussions, we’ll explore how and why our possessions become connected to who we are and what they can tell us about ourselves and our culture. Class discussions will be guided by Daniel Miller’s book "Stuff" (2009).
