The Biology for the Next Generation Workshop will be offered in two formats: 1) All Virtual workshops and 2) Hybrid which will be a mixture of virtual and in-person workshops. Please use this page to register for the HYBRID Workshop series. Sessions will meet VIRTUALLY Monday and Friday 8:30-11:30 am and 1:00-3:30 pm. Sessions will meet IN PERSON Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8:30-11:30 am and 1:00-3:30 pm. The in-person sessions will provide teachers with full lab experiences, data discussions, and examples of set-up for classroom implementation. When meeting in person, participants will work in collaborative groups which may include colleagues in person as well as educators participating virtually. If you would like more information about the Virtual Course, please go back to the workshops page. Patterns Biology is the culminating course in the 3-year high school Patterns Science sequence. This workshop focuses on three-dimensional (3D) learning through culturally responsive, phenomena-based storylines that intertwine the disciplinary core ideas of biology with the scientific and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts as described in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Participants will experience the Patterns Approach of using inquiry and exploration to teach content to students as well as how to integrate talk structures and classroom discourse into their instructional design including a variety of data discussion methods. Additionally, participants will learn how to include instructional practices that support student scientific writing that advance equitable engagement of students as they grapple with real-world applications in Biology. These applications involve topics such as social justice themes, implementation of Oregon’s Tribal History/Shared History lessons and more complex mathematical patterns and trends.
